Randomised controlled trialHumansWith luteolin (co-ultramicronised PEA-LUT), with olfactory training

This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with luteolin (co-ultramicronised PEA-LUT), with olfactory training. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.

Design
Randomised controlled trial
Subjects
Italian patients with post-COVID smell loss and parosmia; number not stated in the abstract
Dose used in the study
Daily oral ultramicronised palmitoylethanolamide with luteolin plus olfactory training, or placebo plus olfactory training
Duration
90 consecutive days
What was measured
Sniffin' Sticks identification test at baseline and day 90; patient reports of parosmia or aversive smells such as cacosmia or a petrol-type smell.

What the authors reported

PEA-LUT with olfactory training improved quantitative smell loss compared with training alone, but the effect on parosmia was limited. The authors conclude the supplement acts on central neuro-inflammation and has limited or no effect on peripheral damage to the olfactory nerve and epithelium. No numbers are given in the abstract.

Limits of this study

Group sizes, effect sizes and statistics are not given in the abstract. Participants were Italian post-COVID patients only. The authors declare no conflict of interest.
