Palmitoylethanolamide Reduces Proinflammatory Markers in Unvaccinated Adults Recently Diagnosed with COVID-19: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Randomised controlled trialHumans
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 61 unvaccinated adults recently diagnosed with COVID-19 enrolled. 60 completed, 30 in each group.
- Dose used in the study
- 600 mg of Levagen+ twice a day
- Duration
- 4 weeks
- What was measured
- Blood markers: IL-6, C-reactive protein, ferritin, ICAM-1, soluble P-selectin and the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio as main outcomes
What the authors reported
The authors reported that soluble P-selectin fell in the palmitoylethanolamide group compared with placebo (P = 0.0078), as did IL-1 beta and IL-2. They found no significant differences in IL-6, C-reactive protein, ferritin, ICAM-1 or the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio.
Limits of this study
One of six main outcomes differed from placebo. The two interleukin findings were secondary and, as the authors note, were not adjusted for multiple comparisons. All outcomes were blood markers, and the trial did not report symptoms or recovery. Adverse events and funding were not visible on the page checked.
