Profound Modification of Fatty Acid Profile and Endocannabinoid-Related Mediators in PPARα Agonist Fenofibrate-Treated Mice
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Male C57BL/6J mice fed a standard diet with or without 0.2% fenofibrate
- Dose used in the study
- No palmitoylethanolamide was given; 0.2% fenofibrate in the diet
- Duration
- 21 days
- What was measured
- Fatty acid profile and fatty acid derivatives including PEA and OEA by HPLC and LC-MS; weight gain, food intake, feed efficiency and liver lipids.
What the authors reported
Fenofibrate reduced weight gain, food intake, feed efficiency and liver lipids, sharply reduced essential fatty acids such as 18:3n3, and increased 16:1n7 and 18:1n9. Hepatic PEA and OEA levels rose, which the authors suggest may sustain the reductions in weight and liver lipids.
Limits of this study
A mouse study; it cannot show effect in people or animals treated in practice. PEA was measured, not given. The authors declare no conflict of interest and state funders had no role.
