Lactiplantibacillus sp. LP03 alleviates pulmonary fibrosis by modulating gut microbiota and elevating host palmitoylethanolamide to suppress TGF-β1/Smad2/3-mediated EMT

- Dose used in the study
- Oral PEA supplementation (dose not stated in the abstract); Lactiplantibacillus sp. LP03 and other probiotic strains tested separately

- What was measured
- Mortality, systemic inflammation, lung coefficient, interstitial thickening, collagen deposition and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers; gut microbiota composition; serum metabolomics; PEA's independent effect in vivo and in vitro
What the authors reported
The probiotic strain LP03 reduced mortality, inflammation, lung thickening, collagen deposition and EMT in bleomycin-treated mice, restored gut microbial balance and raised serum PEA. Oral PEA supplementation on its own also reduced fibrosis, acting by suppressing TGF-beta1/Smad2/3 signalling and EMT.
Limits of this study
A mouse model of chemically induced pulmonary fibrosis; it cannot show effect in people with pulmonary fibrosis. The authors declare no competing interests.
