N-palmitoylethanolamide Prevents Parkinsonian Phenotypes in Aged Mice
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Aged (21-month-old) male CD mice given MPTP to model Parkinson's disease
- Dose used in the study
- micronised PEA (PEAm), pretreatment for 60 days; exact dose not stated in the abstract
- Duration
- 60-day pretreatment, then 4 MPTP injections over 24 hours, mice killed 7 days later
- What was measured
- Behavioural deficits, tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine transporter expression, alpha-synuclein and beta3-tubulin, proinflammatory cytokines, hippocampal neurogenesis
What the authors reported
PEAm pretreatment lessened MPTP-induced behavioural deficits and preserved tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine transporter expression, while blunting the rise in alpha-synuclein and beta3-tubulin in the substantia nigra. PEAm also reduced proinflammatory cytokine expression and supported hippocampal neurogenesis.
Limits of this study
An aged mouse model of Parkinson's disease; it cannot show effect in people. Authors declare no competing interests; other funding links not stated in the abstract.
