Co-Ultramicronized Palmitoylethanolamide/Luteolin Restores Oligodendrocyte Homeostasis via Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-α in an In Vitro Model of Alzheimer's Disease
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith luteolin (co-ultramicronised with palmitoylethanolamide, PEALut)
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with luteolin (co-ultramicronised with palmitoylethanolamide, PEALut). Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- In vitro co-culture of oligodendrocyte precursor cells and astrocytes exposed to beta-amyloid 1-42
- Dose used in the study
- Co-ultramicronised palmitoylethanolamide and luteolin (co-ultra PEALut)
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Astrocyte reactivity and inflammation, growth factor levels, and oligodendrocyte precursor cell maturation (cell surface area and arborisation) after beta-amyloid 1-42 exposure
What the authors reported
Beta-amyloid 1-42 triggered astrocyte reactivity and inflammation, reduced growth factors needed for oligodendrocyte precursor cell maturation, and left oligodendrocytes with low surface area and few arborisations. Co-ultra PEALut counteracted the beta-amyloid-induced inflammation and astrocyte reactivity and preserved oligodendrocyte morphology, in part through a PPAR-alpha-dependent mechanism.
Limits of this study
An in vitro cell model of Alzheimer's disease; it cannot show effect in people or animals. One author discloses a contract with Epitech Group SpA, which had no role in study design, analysis or the decision to publish; the other authors declare no conflict of interest.
