Jessica C Gaspar, Catherine Healy, Mehnaz I Ferdousi, Michelle Roche, David P Finn. Biomedicines. 2021 May 27;9(6):610.

Laboratory studyOther animals

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Rats with or without chronic inflammatory pain induced by Complete Freund's Adjuvant
Dose used in the study
Intraperitoneal PPAR antagonists (GW6471, GSK0660, GW9662) or palmitoylethanolamide; doses not stated in the abstract
Duration
Not stated in the abstract
What was measured
Anxiety-like behaviour (elevated plus maze, open field, light-dark box) and memory (novel object recognition); hippocampal N-acylethanolamine levels.

What the authors reported

This laboratory study found:

  • Rats with inflammatory pain showed impaired recognition and spatial memory, and blocking PPAR-alpha worsened spatial memory further.
  • Oleoylethanolamide was higher in the dorsal hippocampus of the pain group.
  • Pain did not change innate anxiety responses.
  • The abstract reports no specific effect of palmitoylethanolamide treatment.

Limits of this study

A rat model; it cannot show effect in people. PEA doses and PEA-specific results are not given in the abstract. The authors declare no conflict of interest and state that funders had no role.
