Palmitoylethanolamide Modulates GPR55 Receptor Signaling in the Ventral Hippocampus to Regulate Mesolimbic Dopamine Activity, Social Interaction, and Memory Processing
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Rats, with PEA injected directly into the ventral hippocampus
- Dose used in the study
- PEA administered intra-ventral hippocampus; dose not stated in the abstract
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Ventral tegmental area dopamine neuron firing/bursting, social interaction, recognition memory, spatial location memory, fear memory, and opiate-related reward memory
What the authors reported
Intra-hippocampal PEA produced a hyper-dopaminergic mesolimbic state, with increased firing and bursting of dopamine neurons, and disrupted social interaction, recognition memory, spatial location memory and context-dependent fear memory, but not opiate-related reward memory. Effects were blocked by a GPR55 antagonist and needed NMDA receptor transmission.
Limits of this study
A rat study using direct brain injection of PEA; it cannot show effect from oral or systemic PEA use in people. Authors declare no competing financial interests.
