Metabolomics of bronchoalveolar lavage in children with persistent wheezing
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 30 children with persistent wheezing and 30 age-matched infant controls
- Dose used in the study
- Not stated in the abstract; no treatment was given
- Duration
- 2-year follow-up
- What was measured
- LC/MS metabolomic profile of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid; wheezing recurrence over 2 years.
What the authors reported
Children with persistent wheezing had a distinct lung metabolome, with higher choline, oleamide, butyrylcarnitine, palmitoylethanolamide and several phosphatidylcholines. Glycerophospholipid metabolism was the most relevant pathway, and among children with recurrence, those born prematurely had more butyrylcarnitine.
Limits of this study
An observational study that measured natural palmitoylethanolamide in lung fluid; it did not test PEA as a treatment and cannot show cause. Small sample. The authors declare no competing interests.
