Proteomics and metabolomics profiling reveal panels of circulating diagnostic biomarkers and molecular subtypes in stable COPD
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 40 patients with stable advanced COPD and 40 controls, plus 29 COPD and 31 controls for validation
- Dose used in the study
- No palmitoylethanolamide was given; blood levels were measured
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Plasma proteomics and metabolomics; diagnostic accuracy of biomarker panels by ROC analysis; molecular subtyping
What the authors reported
The study found:
- A panel of theophylline, palmitoylethanolamide, hypoxanthine and cadherin 5 diagnosed advanced COPD with an area under the ROC curve of 0.98, sensitivity 0.94 and specificity 0.95.
- Proteomics separated three COPD subtypes.
- Theophylline and CDH5 were raised only in advanced, not mild, COPD.
Limits of this study
An observational biomarker study; PEA was a marker, not a treatment. Small cohorts from one centre. The authors declare no conflict of interest.
