Serum Endocannabinoid and Mood Changes after Exercise in Major Depressive Disorder
Controlled trialHumans
- Design
- Controlled trial
- Subjects
- 17 women with major depressive disorder
- Dose used in the study
- No palmitoylethanolamide was given; serum levels were measured
- Duration
- Two separate 20-minute cycling sessions, one at prescribed moderate intensity and one at self-selected intensity
- What was measured
- Serum anandamide, 2-AG, palmitoylethanolamide, oleoylethanolamide and 2-oleoylglycerol before and within 10 minutes after exercise; mood and state anxiety before and at 10 and 30 minutes after.
What the authors reported
The study found:
- Moderate exercise raised anandamide (P=0.013) and oleoylethanolamide (P=0.024), with moderate negative correlations between these changes and mood disturbance.
- No change in palmitoylethanolamide is reported.
- Self-selected exercise produced no changes in any lipid and no lipid-mood relationships.
Limits of this study
A small within-subjects study; no PEA was given and palmitoylethanolamide showed no reported change. Results are in women with depression only. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
