In vivo brain levels of acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine after oleoylethanolamide or palmitoylethanolamide administrations are mediated by PPARα engagement

Laboratory study
Subjects
Not stated in the abstract (in vivo microdialysis study with systemic drug injection; species not specified)
Dose used in the study
Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) or PEA, 5, 10 or 30 mg/kg, injected intraperitoneally, with or without the PPAR-alpha antagonist MK-886 (30 mg/kg intraperitoneal)
Duration
Not stated in the abstract
What was measured
Acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) levels in the basal forebrain, using in vivo microdialysis and HPLC

What the authors reported

Both OEA and PEA significantly increased acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine levels in the basal forebrain. Pre-treatment with the PPAR-alpha antagonist MK-886 blocked these increases, indicating the effect depends on PPAR-alpha activation.

Limits of this study

An animal-model pharmacology study; it cannot show effect in people. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
