Vestibulodynia: Synergy Between Palmitoylethanolamide + Transpolydatin and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
Randomised controlled trialHumansWith transpolydatin
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with transpolydatin. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 20 women with vestibulodynia, all using home TENS
- Dose used in the study
- PEA 400 mg plus transpolydatin 40 mg twice daily, or placebo
- Duration
- 60 days (mean 26.7 TENS sessions)
- What was measured
- Visual analogue pain scale, Marinoff dyspareunia score and vulvar vestibule current perception threshold at baseline and day 60
What the authors reported
Both groups improved significantly with TENS, and the improvement was similar between groups (VAS p = 0.57; dyspareunia p = 0.38). In a secondary analysis by disease duration, the PEA group showed greater improvement in women with more recent onset.
Limits of this study
Primary comparison found no difference between PEA plus transpolydatin and placebo. The positive finding comes from a subgroup analysis in a 20-woman trial. Both groups received TENS, so the trial tests the add-on only. Two-month duration.
