Matthias K Auer, Dorothea Gebert, Sarah V Biedermann, Laura Bindila, Günter Stalla, Nicole Reisch, Anna Kopczak, Johannes Fuss. Eur J Endocrinol. 2021 Jul 1;185(2):231-239.

Observational studyHumans

Design
Observational study
Subjects
18 patients with craniopharyngioma and 16 age- and sex-matched controls
Dose used in the study
Not applicable; palmitoylethanolamide was measured, not given
Duration
Single session with endurance exercise
What was measured
Blood 2-AG, anandamide, oleoylethanolamide, palmitoylethanolamide and arachidonic acid at rest and after exercise, with ACTH, cortisol and copeptin.

What the authors reported

This observational study found:

  • Resting 2-AG was more than twice as high in patients as in controls.
  • Exercise raised 2-AG and oleoylethanolamide in controls but not in patients.
  • HPA measures did not explain 2-AG differences.
  • The abstract reports no group difference or exercise change for palmitoylethanolamide.

Limits of this study

A small cross-sectional study of one centre; it measured PEA levels and did not test PEA treatment. No PEA-specific result is given in the abstract. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
