Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Combined Phycocyanin and Palmitoylethanolamide in Human Lung and Prostate Epithelial Cells
Laboratory studyHumansWith phycocyanin
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with phycocyanin. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Human bronchial epithelial cells (Beas-2B) and human prostate epithelial cells (HPrEpiC), exposed to an infectious stimulus
- Dose used in the study
- Phycocyanin and palmitoylethanolamide, alone and combined, applied to cultured cells
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Cytotoxicity, reactive oxygen species production, and inflammatory cytokine transcription in stimulated cells; cyclooxygenase-2 activity, glutathione synthesis and mitochondrial respiratory burst
What the authors reported
The phycocyanin and palmitoylethanolamide combination protected against cytotoxicity and reduced both reactive oxygen species production and inflammatory cytokine transcription. It reduced oxidative stress and inflammation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2, increasing glutathione synthesis, and decreasing infection-driven mitochondrial respiratory burst.
Limits of this study
A cell-line study; it cannot show effect in people. The authors declare no conflict of interest.
