A Combination of α-Lipoic Acid (ALA) and Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) Blocks Endotoxin-Induced Oxidative Stress and Cytokine Storm: A Possible Intervention for COVID-19

Francesca Uberti, Sara Ruga, Mahitab Farghali, Rebecca Galla, Claudio Molinari. J Diet Suppl. 2023;20(2):133-155.

Laboratory studyHumansWith alpha-lipoic acid

This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with alpha-lipoic acid. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Human lung epithelial cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)
Dose used in the study
50 micromolar alpha-lipoic acid plus 5 micromolar palmitoylethanolamide, applied to cells before or after LPS
Duration
Not stated in the abstract
What was measured
Reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide and cytokines linked to the COVID-19 cytokine storm in an LPS cell model of acute lung injury.

What the authors reported

The combination reduced reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide and modulated the main cytokines, whether given before or after LPS. The largest effect was seen when it was given after LPS.

Limits of this study

A cell-culture study; it cannot show any effect in people with COVID-19 or any other illness. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
