Effective Management of Chronic Low Back Pain in the Elderly: A One-Year Cohort Study of Oxygen-Ozone Therapy Under CT Guidance Combined with Alpha Lipoic Acid, Palmitoylethanolamide, and Myrrh
Observational studyHumansWith alpha-lipoic acid and myrrh, alongside CT-guided oxygen-ozone paravertebral injections
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with alpha-lipoic acid and myrrh, alongside CT-guided oxygen-ozone paravertebral injections. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 276 patients aged 65 to 92 years with chronic unilateral or bilateral low back pain
- Dose used in the study
- Oral alpha-lipoic acid 800 mg/day, PEA 600 mg/day, myrrh 200 mg/day, alongside CT-guided oxygen-ozone paravertebral injections
- Duration
- 30-day oral regimen; outcomes followed at one month and one year
- What was measured
- Pain (Visual Analog Scale) and functional outcome (modified McNab method) at one month and one year after treatment.
What the authors reported
At one month, 32.94% of patients reported excellent improvement, with mean VAS falling from 8.17 to 2.81. At one year, 68.15% had a cumulative positive outcome, 17.78% had complete pain resolution, and mean VAS was 3.57.
Limits of this study
An observational cohort study with no control group, combining PEA with ozone injections, alpha-lipoic acid and myrrh, so PEA's individual contribution cannot be separated. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
