Changes in plasma endocannabinoids concentrations correlate with 18F-FDG PET/MR uptake in brown adipocytes in humans
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 25 people: 17 with active brown adipose tissue (median age 25) and 8 without (median age 28)
- Dose used in the study
- Not applicable; palmitoylethanolamide was measured in plasma, not given
- Duration
- 2 hours of cold exposure, samples at baseline, 60 and 120 minutes
- What was measured
- Plasma endocannabinoids during cold exposure and brown adipose tissue activity by 18F-FDG PET/MR.
What the authors reported
AEA, EPEA and OEA fell during cooling in both groups, more steeply in those with active brown fat. PEA and SEA fell significantly only in the brown fat positive group: PEA fold change 0.7 (p = 0.007) at 60 minutes and 0.81 (p = 0.004) at 120 minutes; SEA 0.8 (p = 0.03) and 0.9 (p = 0.01).
Limits of this study
A small biomarker study of 25 people; it cannot show cause or any effect of taking PEA. The authors declare no commercial or financial relationships.
