Retrospective observational study to investigate Sinerga, a multifactorial nutritional product, and bacterial extracts in the prevention of recurrent respiratory infections in children

Nigro A, Nicastro A, Trodella R. Int J Immunopathol Pharmacol. 2014;27(3):455-460.

Observational studyHumansWith bovine colostrum, phenylethylamine and a probiotic yeast

This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with bovine colostrum, phenylethylamine and a probiotic yeast. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.

Design
Observational study
Subjects
167 children aged 3 to 7 with recurrent respiratory infections, given either the supplement or bacterial extracts
Dose used in the study
Sinerga, a product containing palmitoylethanolamide, bovine colostrum, phenylethylamine and Kluyveromyces probiotic; doses not in the abstract
Duration
Retrospective review of about 9 months
What was measured
Frequency of respiratory infections that led to an antibiotic prescription

What the authors reported

49 percent of children on the supplement had no antibiotic-treated infection, against 5 percent of those on bacterial extracts, and all supplement children had two or fewer episodes, against 51 percent of the comparison group.

Limits of this study

Retrospective, not randomised, not blinded, and the abstract gives no group sizes. A four-ingredient product, so nothing can be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide. A study in children; nothing in it bears on unsupervised use. Funding not stated.
