What was measured
What causes sepsis-associated encephalopathy and septic encephalitis, how it is diagnosed, and how it is treated: a 2016 to 2020 literature review, including where palmitoylethanolamide fits among candidate treatments.

What the authors reported

The authors describe delirium as the main sign, inflammation and blood-brain barrier changes as causes, and antibiotics as the backbone of treatment. In their expert opinion they list palmitoylethanolamide among licensed drugs or supplements that might be effective, alongside statins, L-DOPA/benserazide, beta-hydroxybutyrate and tetracyclines. No PEA trial data are given.

Limits of this study

A narrative review; the mention of palmitoylethanolamide is an opinion, not a result. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
