Intrapersonal Stability of Plasma Metabolomic Profiles over 10 Years among Women
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 1,880 women (1,184 repeated samples) in the primary dataset and 1,456 women (488 repeated samples) in the secondary dataset, Nurses' Health Study
- Dose used in the study
- Not stated in the abstract; no treatment was given
- Duration
- Samples donated about 10 years apart
- What was measured
- Within-person stability (intra-class correlation) of 5,938 plasma metabolites and metabolite features over 10 years
What the authors reported
The study found:
- Median ICC was 0.43 for known metabolites.
- The most stable were N6,N6-dimethyllysine (0.82), dimethylguanidino valerate (0.72) and N-acetylornithine (0.72).
- The least stable were palmitoylethanolamide (ICC = 0.05), ectoine (0.09) and trimethylamine-N-oxide (0.16).
- Results in the secondary dataset were similar.
Limits of this study
A biomarker stability study in women; it measured natural blood palmitoylethanolamide and did not test PEA as a treatment. The low PEA stability means a single blood measurement poorly reflects a person's long-term level. The authors declare no conflict of interest.
