Laboratory studyDogs

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Skin biopsies from dogs with atopic dermatitis and from healthy dogs; numbers not in the abstract
Dose used in the study
No PEA given. The dogs' own skin PEA was measured
Duration
Not applicable
What was measured
Lipid mediator levels in skin by mass spectrometry; mast cell number, granule content and in-situ proliferation

What the authors reported

PEA and related lipids were higher in atopic skin than in healthy skin, PEA most of all. Mast cells were more numerous and were proliferating in atopic skin, with less granule content in the perifollicular compartment.

Limits of this study

An observational tissue study. The rise in the skin's own PEA is interpreted by the authors as a protective response, which is a hypothesis. It does not test whether giving PEA helps. One author is from Innovet.
